How I Lost 35 Pounds After 50 by Walking

How I Lost 35 Pounds After 50 by Walking

In February 2024, I found myself averaging only 4,000 steps a day. I wasn’t happy with my body or how I felt. Turning 50 was right around the corner, and I knew something had to change. It was the middle of winter here in Ohio, cold, gray, and definitely not motivating. The scale was slowly creeping up, my clothes were tighter, and my energy was low.

As a busy mom of teens in the throes of midlife and perimenopause, I didn’t have time for the gym or intense workout programs. Like many women in midlife, I’d tried all the things over the years, from starvation diets to workouts that left me sore and overstimulated. But the real change didn’t come from something complicated. It started with something simple… walking.

Starting Small and Finding My Routine

I wanted to add an exercise routine that actually fit into my busy schedule of Ubering my teens around town. In my search for something sustainable, I came across the amazing benefits of walking in midlife. It’s low-impact, easy to start, and can significantly improve your physical and mental well-being. With no equipment needed, all I really required was a little motivation, and my Apple Watch.

And the best part? It didn’t just change my body, it changed my entire outlook. I committed to walking 10,000 steps a day for 30 days, and the experience was transformative. I kept going for six months straight, adding mindful eating along the way, and the results truly blew me away.

My Favorite Tricks to Stay Motivated

We own a treadmill, which came in handy on cold or rainy days, but honestly, most of my steps came from just moving more at home. While cooking dinner, I’d walk laps around my kitchen island. In the evenings, instead of sitting on the couch to watch TV, I’d walk laps around the family room and hallway, TV still on, steps still happening. I started looking for little pockets of time in my day to squeeze in 500–1,000 steps here and there, and it really started to add up.

After a few months, I wanted to push myself a little further. I bought a weighted vest, which I now wear for both indoor and outdoor walks. Sometimes I even wear it around the house for extra motivation! Walking with a weighted vest makes your body work a bit harder, helping to burn more calories, strengthen muscles and bones, and improve cardiovascular fitness. I also created a playlist of favorite podcasts and YouTube videos to keep me entertained — or invited my teen daughter to join me for a quick walk and catch-up.

The Benefits of Walking in Midlife

Honestly, walking in midlife has so many benefits beyond just weight loss. It’s one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your physical and mental health, especially once you hit your 40s and 50s. Walking helps balance hormones, lower cortisol (that pesky stress hormone we talk about so much!), and boost your mood with those happy endorphins. It’s gentle on your joints yet powerful enough to improve heart health, metabolism, and energy levels. And the best part? You can do it anywhere, no gym membership, fancy shoes, or perfect weather required. Just you, your favorite playlist, and a little daily commitment to feeling your best.

The Results and What Happens Next

The best wellness habits are the ones you can actually stick to and this one is totally doable. No more endless running or crazy HIIT workouts. Just simple, sustainable movement that delivers results.
